XCI is an all-new engine custom built to maximize the capability of the Commander X16 retrocomputer to play a point-and-click adventure game, just like the 16-bit classics of the late 1980s and early 1990s. If you enjoyed the games written for SCI (from Sierra) or SCUMM (LucasArts), XCI is the easiest way to recreate those experiences for an all-new 8-bit platform.
You don't need any programming experience to build a game with XCI, but you do need to be creative! Design 16-color backgrounds and sprites and interact with them using a simple scripting language that abstracts away all of the details of graphics rendering and mouse interaction.
For sound, you can create music using the YM2151 FM synthesis chip and playback sampled sound effects through the X16's PCM interface.
You can easily design the interface of the game, down to the menus and mouse cursors. Define inventory items and state information that can be saved for picking up the game later. You can design a game with up to 2550 unique level screens! You are only limited by your imagination... and the X16's graphics and sound and base RAM of 512kB.
There is extensive documentation and an immersive series of tutorial videos available for free. In fact, the engine and its multi-platform software development kit are completely free and open source!
